Waterfall Road Reopening This Weekend After Slip Fix

The Kāpiti Coast District Council will re-open Waterfall Road to traffic and pedestrians this weekend, after six weeks of work to fix the major slip that closed the road in September last year.

Group Manager Infrastructure Services Sean Mallon said this is great news for residents in the area, and it’s great to have completed the job ahead of schedule.

“The road at Mackays Crossing and the bottom of Maungakotukutuku Road had to be closed due to the risk of slope destabilisation and for public safety. Residents in the area have been patiently waiting while we carried out these important works and our crews have worked hard to come in ahead of the June end date we’d originally put in place.”

“We’ve worked closely with geotechnical experts to stabilise the slip face and we’ve moved an estimated 9,500m3, which is roughly what it would take to fill around six main-sized pools at our Aquatic Centre,” says Mr Mallon.

Waterfall Road is the designated detour route if State Highway 1 is closed between Mackays Crossing and Poplar Avenue, and the remedial work was joint-funded by the NZ Transport Agency and the Council.
