#MeToo Community Forum – Auckland, Tuesday 29th May
#MeToo Community Forum – Auckland, Tuesday 29th May, 7-9pm
The Auckland Women’s Centre will hold a #MeToo Forum on Tuesday 29th May at Western Springs Community Garden Hall – an opportunity to discuss what #MeToo means in Aotearoa.
Auckland Women’s Centre Manager Leonie Morris, states “At the Auckland Women’s Centre we see women who have been abused, sexually harassed and needing support, coming through our doors on a regular basis. These women also struggle in a system where almost everywhere there is disbelief, silence and victim blaming. Men have exploited power imbalances to abuse people in positions of trust, and women who spoke up weren’t listened to. Now, we hope, this is all changing”
The #MeToo movement has lifted the lid off this hideous public secret, revealing that so many have suffered, revealing how widespread rape culture is, and how inadequate the response has been.
Speakers at the #MeToo Forum include Jan Logie – Parliamentary Undersecretary to the Minister of Justice, with a focus on domestic and violence issues, Dr Huhana Hickey – legal expert in Māori, disability and human rights, Alison Mau – the broadcaster who has launched a #MeToo NZ sexual harassment investigation and Mengzhu Fu – Shakti Youth – empowering young people from diverse Asian, African and Middle Eastern backgrounds in Aotearoa
Leonie says “Our community needs the #MeToo movement to succeed until every space is free of sexual harassment and abuse. We are particularly honoured to have such knowledgeable speakers who are at the forefront of this massive wave of change”
The evening will give our experts and the community the chance to hear and discuss questions like; 'What does #MeToo look like in Aotearoa, particularly for Māori, disabled and migrant women?
And “How does the movement fit with the
Government’s work and plans on sexual
violence?”
