Wet start to the week but fine weather to finish
After a week of wet and windy weather, this weekend has been relatively settled. Unfortunately, there is another week of unsettled weather in store as a complex low pressure system spreads across from the Tasman Sea early in the week, bringing a series of rain bands across central and northern New Zealand. Cold temperatures are expected across the country for much of the week, with highs in the early teens for the North Island and single digits for the South Island.
On Monday, the complex low moves onto central New Zealand, bringing periods of heavy rain. There is a Severe Weather Watch for heavy rain for Taranaki, Taumarunui and Waitomo. The east coast of the South Island will see areas of low cloud and drizzle, while the West Coast will be mainly fine.
On Tuesday a weak front moves up the South Island from the south, continuing the drizzle on the east coast of the island. Meanwhile, the low moves over the northern North Island, spreading the heaviest rain there.
A ridge spreads over the South Island on Wednesday, while easterlies associated with the low to the north of the country affect the North Island. This set up persists through Thursday. Heavy rain in the north and rain or drizzle in eastern areas further south, gradually ease through Wednesday and Thursday.
By midday Friday the ridge is established over the whole country making for a fine, settled end to the working week.
