Luggate (Red) Bridge repairs and maintenance

Luggate (Red) Bridge repairs and maintenance, Queenstown Lakes District, SH8A

People who drive between Wanaka and Tarras on State Highway 8A, may experience some delays on Monday and for the following fortnight at nights, says the NZ Transport Agency.

Annual maintenance work on the 102-year-old Luggate (Red) Bridge fromMonday, 25 June, will require a day’s full closure to enable the scaffolding to go in place, followed by work at night over a fortnight to minimise disruption to road users.

The bridge will close to traffic at 9 am on Monday and reopen at 5pm. At nights the detour will be in place from 7 pm to 6 am Monday to Thursday.

“Maintenance work on the bridge, which crosses the Clutha River, will take up to a fortnight to complete,” says John Jarvis, Senior Network Manager, NZ Transport Agency. “The works involve replacing timber running boards, deck boards and undertaking deck strengthening.”

• The bridge will be closed for the first day on Monday, 25 June, 9 am till 5pm for scaffolding to be installed.

• Detours will be in place via Camp Hill Road. Drivers will be re-directed with temporary detour signage.

The repairs will then be completed at nights over a two week period again with detours in place during the hours of 7pm to 6am on weeknights Monday toThursday.

At the end of the project, on Monday, 9 July, the bridge will again be closed during the day to remove the scaffolding, with the same detour in place via Camp Hill Road.

“People will need to build in extra time on their journeys as delays can be expected for the duration of the project,” says John Jarvis.

The Transport Agency thanks everyone for their patience and for taking care while this important safety work on the Red Bridge is completed.
