‘A Winter Tale’ Arrives Next Week

21/06/18

Winter has now well and truly arrived in Dunedin, and as the mercury continues to drop large illuminated creations are starting to emerge from a nondescript workshop in South Dunedin. This can only mean one thing – the 2018 Dunedin Midwinter Carnival is just around the corner!

Over the last two months, the Carnival Art Team has been creating what organisers say will be the biggest and best Carnival yet. The Carnival Procession will feature over 1000 people carrying hundreds of lanterns and over 100 costumed performers bringing to life classic fairy tale stories.

“People can expect to see a not so little red riding hood, a giant wolf lantern, 12 dancing princesses, jumping frog lanterns, and many more eye-catching and spectacular creations,” spokesperson Paul Smith said.

New enlarged route for 2018 event

After a year of fundraising and planning, a new larger route has been unveiled for this year’s event. “This is a significant achievement for our event that will result in much better viewing for the audience and give our event room to grow further,” said Mr Smith.

The procession will begin at 6 pm from First Church, travelling down Moray Place, up Stuart Street and around the Octagon before returning to First Church via Princes Street.

Organisers encouraged people to arrive early to get a good viewing spot and to take advantage of the food stalls and entertainment on offer. The event begins earlier and finishes later than previous years.

“With over two dozen vendors, braziers to keep attendees warm and two great local bands, this will be a spectacular night out for the whole family.”

Fireworks back due to public demand

The event culminates in drumming, fire performance and a fireworks display from the Civic Centre. Fireworks was not possible in 2017 but is back due to public demand.

“We are really pleased to be able to end the event with a big bang. It’s a great way to enjoy a winter evening,” said Mr Smith.

Presented with the support of over 120 volunteers, the annual Midwinter Carnival will take place from 5 pm on Saturday 30 June in the city centre unless postponed until Sunday 1 July. Roads to the Octagon will be closed from 2:00 pm with some bus routes diverted until at least 9:00 pm.
