City Library to Celebrate Pride Fest

Palmerston North City Library has worked with its community to create a series of events celebrating Pride Fest. This is the first time the city’s library has developed a programme of events around the international Pride movement. A series of events and activities will be hosted from 21 June – 30 June.

“We want to celebrate our diverse community and explore the theme of pride,” says Debbie Duncan, General Manager – Library and Community Services. “It is something our city embraces, but in past perhaps a little too quietly. It’s a time to ask, what does the Pride movement mean for our LGBTQI communities and for our city.”

Included in the events are talks from Kyle Mewburn, Ruby Dax and Renee; the screening of More than Four Films, rainbow pet accessories workshops and a pet parade.

Kyle Mewburn, one of New Zealand’s most successful children’s authors has recently grappled with her transgender identity. She will discuss her personal journey and her writing, and how these two things intertwine in her talk; Dinosaurs, Dragons and Dresses – The Road to Transition.

Renée a leading lesbian feminist, dramatist and fiction writer who describes herself as a ‘lesbian feminist with socialist working-class ideals’ will publicly discuss her thoughts and views of life with Mary McCullam.

Palmerston North’s own Ruby Dax will visit the library for some drag queen storytelling and rainbow craft for 1 to 5 year olds.

Also on offer is a screening of ‘More Than Four’, a series of videos that showcases 30 members of the rainbow community and their unique experiences.

Pride Fest will finish with an inaugural Rainbow Pet Parade on Saturday June 30. Prior to the parade, there are two workshops for people to make their pet the brightest, ‘blingiest’ to win a competition for the best dressed pet.
