Representation Review open for consultation
Palmerston North City Councillors are seeking feedback on how ratepayers and residents should be represented on Council.
Every six years under the Local Electoral Act 2001, Councils are required to review their representation arrangements. Councillors have opted for public consultation as part of their review.
The Representation Review will consider:
• The number of Councillors.
• How Councillors are elected – city-wide, wards or a mixture of both. If wards – how many wards, and how many Councillors in each ward.
• Whether there should be Community Boards. If so, how many members should they have, which areas should each cover?
Any adopted changes resulting from this review will apply to the 2019 local government elections.
In addition, Councillors are also seeking feedback on how Māori participation at Council can be enhanced.
The consultation opened today and submissions close on July 30. Submitters will also have the option of presenting their views at the Extraordinary Council meeting on August 13 2018.
Representation Review booklets and submissions forms are available in city libraries and the PNCC Customer Service Centre from Monday July 9.
Online submission forms and further information are available on Council’s website: pncc.govt.nz
