Luggate (Red) Bridge Repair Works

Luggate (Red) Bridge Repair Works - Update, Queenstown Lakes District, SH8A

People who use the road between Wanaka and Tarras, State Highway 8A, may experience some disruptions, starting this week and going into next week.

Further repair work on the Luggate (Red) Bridge is required as unexpected damage was identified during recent repair works. Minor delays of up to 10 minutes are expected during the day on Wednesday 18 July from 9am to 5pm to install additional scaffolding. Thursday 19 July will be used as a contingency day if scaffolding work takes longer than anticipated. This will be followed by work at night to minimise disruption to road users from Sunday 22 July.

“The additional repair works on the 102-year-old bridge, which crosses the Clutha River, will take up to a week to complete. The works involve replacing timber running boards, deck boards and undertaking deck strengthening,” says John Jarvis, Senior Network Manager, NZ Transport Agency.

The bridge will be closed for night works from Sunday 22 July to Saturday 28 July between the hours of 7pm till 6am. Detours will be in place via Camp Hill Road as for earlier work. Drivers will be re-directed with temporary detour signage.

Minor delays of up to 10 minutes are expected during the day on Monday 30 July from 9am to 5pm to retighten the deck bolts.

The bridge will be closed from 9am to 5pm on Tuesday 31 July to allow removal of the scaffolding, with the same detour in place via Camp Hill Road.

“People will need to build in extra time on their journeys as delays can be expected for the duration of the project,” says John Jarvis.

The Transport Agency thanks everyone for their patience and for taking care while this important safety work on the Red Bridge is completed.
