Container Art: Adding fun and funky in the city
Adding fun and funky in
the city
Even functional can be attractive and fun – and there is no reason why it shouldn’t be.
As part of the drive to build vibrancy in the city centre, chairs and tables have been added to the central mall. About 85 people can now have their lunch, gather or just sit and relax.
Some are built in, but others are moveable so need to be put away at night.
To house them a 10 foot container has been set up in the nearest car park – and it has been painted up and given a ‘Banksy’ flavour to give it a second purpose as an artwork.
The tables are brought out in the morning by 10am by the City Assist team, and returned to the container at about 4pm, provided it is not raining. In summer shade umbrellas will also be out in the mall and stored in the container at night.
“People are what make our city centre vibrant – gathering, shopping, learning and socialising,” said Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst.
“These tables and chairs change the whole atmosphere in the central mall and I just love going through there and seeing so many people enjoying the new outdoor seating areas.”
