Feedback sought from Dogs in CBD Trial
Feedback sought from Dogs in CBD Trial
From Thursday 23 August, dog owners have been allowed to bring their dog on-leash into the central business district. Council agreed to the year-long trial to decide whether to permanently lift the prohibition on dogs in the CBD.
The reasoning behind the 12 month trial is to see whether allowing people and their companion dogs to enjoy public places contributes to city centre vibrancy. It also allow Council time to consider what the permanent dog control status for the CBD should be.
“There is a societal shift to provide more dog-friendly environments,” says David Murphy, Acting General Manager - Planning and Strategy. “It’s also becoming widespread practice across the country to allow dogs into town centres, to offer lifestyle benefits for dog owners and their companion animals.”
Throughout the 12 month trial, Council is seeking feedback from the public, both positive and negative on how they think the trial is going.
“Councillors will receive the feedback regularly, and will assist them with the final decision on the status.”
Animal Control Officers are regularly monitoring the CBD. New dog litter bag pods have been installed around the CBD as well as signs reminding people that all dogs should be on leash.
