Great Harbour Way funding in NLTP a welcome step

Great Harbour Way funding in NLTP a welcome step

Great Harbour Way Trustee and former Mayor Celia Wade-Brown is delighted the Government will be advancing the missing link in the Great Harbour Way.

“The Great Harbour Way, Te Aranui o Pōneke, is an amazing scenic opportunity for locals and tourists alike, for both recreation and commuting.” says Ms Celia Wade-Brown.

“Fixing the gap between Ngauranga and Petone will also seamlessly connect the capital to the Remutaka Trail. Both Hutt and Wellington City Councils are working on their parts, New Zealand Transport Agency must do their section.”

“Trustees look forward to runners, walkers, wheelchair users and cyclists all being able to enjoy this seaside route. It will be a great asset for the region – and might even offer good whale watching!”

Many hours have been spent analysing possible connections between Wellington and the Hutt Valley and we look forward to work beginning as soon as possible. The seaside option will protect the rail line and the highway from storms and gives a resilience co-benefit. Availability of ferries and trains mean that there are many options for day or multi-day excursions.

The Great Harbour Way Trust is meeting with New Zealand Transport Agency representatives in September to work together on accelerating progress.

“ A $43m investment in the Ngauranga to Petone section of the shared walking cycling path will provide a much needed walking/cycling connection between Wellington and the Hutt Valley and increase resilience by building a new seawall that will protect the shared path, the rail line and SH2.”
