On every weekend throughout September little gamers can delight in the variety of giant games on offer at MOTAT. These games are designed to stimulate and develop mind, motor, and social skills in a fun and creative environment.

Riding for Change Exhibition

For the 125th anniversary of New Zealand women gaining the right to vote, MOTAT’s suffrage exhibition reveals the surprising role the humble bicycle contributed to the rise of social change, human rights, and rational dress. Discover how communications and social gatherings influenced political movements and meet three prominent female figures of the period, Kate Sheppard, Kate Edgar and Meri Te Tai.
This topical pop-up display will unfold in the historic MOTAT village.

Bubble Weekend

It’s that time of year again, time to blow bubbles and explore the science behind these floating balls of soap! Science in a Van will be hosting four special shows exploring the magic behind the bubble.
With a variety of hands-on activities on offer, young and old will have the chance to step inside a giant bubble, get creative with bubble art and experiment with UV bubbles. Bubble Weekend at MOTAT is back - and it’s better than ever!

From the Old Country to Our Country Holiday Experience

These October school holidays MOTAT celebrates the heritage of our people and the lives they lived before settling here. Step back in time to the 1900s, a period of popular migration to New Zealand. Try your hand at activities that will allow you to immerse yourself in New Zealand’s colonial past from the perspective of some of the migrant groups that have come to shape our multicultural identity.
Experience life as a prospector on the Kauri Gum fields, using traditional tools to dig up the native tree gum from the re-constructed Kauri swamp or revisit New Zealand’s gold rush days and try your hand at panning for gold. From the Old Country to Our Country is part of Auckland’s 2018 Heritage Festival and aligns with this year’s theme: Nga iwi o Tamaki Makaurau – Celebrating the heritage of our people.

The Mind Lab School Holiday Workshops
MOTAT: 805 Great North Road, Western Springs
Time: 9.15am – 4:30pm (drop off from 8.30am)
$150 per day (Discounts for 5+ days available)

The Mind Lab @ MOTAT offers a range of full day school holiday camps for 7-12-year-olds, all of which nurture their boundless, unwavering curiosity! Whether it’s their first session or their fiftieth, they’ll be faced with new, engaging challenges in a supportive, encouraging environment. The Mind Lab’s core philosophy celebrates learning through failure, learning by doing, and empowering young people to lead their own educational journeys.
These full-day workshops comprise two exciting activities (for instance Coding and Robotics) and costs $150/day. Discounts for 5+ days are available. Please contact us on 09 964 4444 to find out more details about this special offer.

Good Old Days - 1930’s

The roaring 20s, fabulous 40s or the swinging 60s, each era from the 1900s to the 1980s comes to life at MOTAT on the first Wednesday of each month. Join us this October as we revisit 1930s New Zealand with live music, food offerings and guided tours highlighting special objects from the MOTAT collection*. Specifically catering for our senior visitors, the MOTAT café will offer specials on the day for SuperGold Card holders and Wheelchair accessible guided tours will also be available.
*Please note activities are subject to change and some are weather dependent.

There is no better time to experience MOTAT than at one of their regular LIVE days! This October, in addition to the usual variety of displays and hands-on activities, visitors will be able to great creative with the team in the heritage Print Shop.

All activities are included as part of the normal MOTAT admission fee. Under 5s get in free.

One for the petrol heads, tech enthusiasts, history buffs, and future thinkers alike, MOTAT’s popular exhibition, Accelerate: Driving New Zealand, delves into the past, present, and future of New Zealand’s love affair with vehicles.
Accelerate: Driving New Zealand is a long-term exhibition for MOTAT with feature objects scheduled to be switched out over time, offering new and exciting reasons to revisit this thought-provoking exhibit.
Current exhibition highlight: check out A1 Team New Zealand’s grand prix offering Black Beauty – on display until November 9th.
