Co-working space opens in Porirua

12 October 2018

Co-working on a large scale has arrived in Porirua, with the opening of The Settlement.

After a fitout of the 625 square-metre first floor above City Fitness at 1 Walton Leigh Ave, businesses, freelancers and startup companies can set up for different periods of time.

Anyone interested can come and check out The Settlement anytime between 8.30am and 5pm on Monday and, for the rest of October, the space can be utilised free of charge to test whether it’s a good fit for them.

There are meeting rooms, modern work spaces with smart TVs and projectors, function rooms available for hire, and it is close to the train station and public transport.

The Settlement was established in Petone 16 months ago by James and Meredith Walshe, and James says the Porirua base is a wonderful spot in a city moving forward.

“We looked into what Porirua City Council was doing with bringing people together and understanding what the city wanted to see for the future,” he said.

“It was great hearing about residents’ desire to see co-working available and we’re excited to be able to meet that gap in the market to bring more businesses together.”

Porirua City Acting General Manager City Growth and Partnerships, Darryn Grant, says at the City Centre Summit in May there was a strong desire from the community to have a co-working space in the city centre and for people to have the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment.

“We are really excited to see space of this quality now available in Porirua and it is great to see this type of investment occurring in the city.”

The Council is hosting Lilia Alexander, Porirua local and founder of the popular Wellington LIVE Facebook page, this Wednesday from 12.30pm to 1.30pm at The Settlement. This is a free event event and a great opportunity to check out the new site, while learning from one of the greatest social media minds in the country.
