ZEALANDIA Takahē chick gets banded and undergoes health check
ZEALANDIA's takahē chick underwent its first
health check and received coloured identification leg bands
on Monday.
As part of this health check a blood sample was taken to determine the sex of the chick. Another sample was taken to add to Takahē Recovery Programme's genetic bank. This will eventually lead to the possibility of the takahē genome being mapped, therefore being able to more accurately manage the breeding population.
The Takahē Recovery Programme haven’t made any decisions on where or when the takahē juvenile will be transferred away from ZEALANDIA for use in the wider breeding programme, but it is likely to be sometime in 2019 or 2020.
