Auckland Council will achieve annual savings of more than $2 million in its ICT department through a reduction in consultants by insourcing roles.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff says, “I know Aucklanders will welcome saving $2 million a year by bringing the ICT work inhouse rather than paying for consultants.

“Council has a duty to spend every dollar of ratepayer’s money wisely and reducing the number of consultants on its books will deliver significant savings.

“Across the board, Council is taking a hard look at its vacancies and staffing levels, and where possible, reducing the number of consultants we hire.

“A total of 64 positions will go from consultants to inhouse roles saving us $2 million a year.

Like we did with animal control, replacing consultants and contractors with inhouse staff makes sense when it can be done efficiently and saves money.

“Reducing the reliance on consultants delivers significant savings and allows Council to focus on increasing resources where they are needed most such as in consenting, libraries and to deliver increased investment in cleaning up our beaches and environment.

“Auckland’s rapid population growth places significant pressure on Council’s services. Staff costs are on track to come in below budget for this financial year, but there are areas such as ICT and consenting where taking on extra staff makes financial sense and provides a better service to Aucklanders,” Phil Goff says.
