Road works will begin on Monday 13 May to improve safety during pick-up and drop-off for Gisborne Girls High School students and their families.

A part of Stanley Road will be widened in order to install parallel parking on both sides of the road. Other improvements such as road markings will be made to ensure a safe environment for students before and after school.

The project is part of a wider Council plan to improve safety around schools at peak times.

Tairāwhiti Roads Journey Manager Helen Harris says “Our community has raised their concerns about the safety of children at peak school times. This is just one of a number of planned projects to improve safety for our children.”

Parents are being advised to use Wellington Street to drop off and pick up their children during the works.

Traffic management will be in place and Stanley Road should be avoided if possible.

The project is expected to take up to six weeks, and will begin on the high school side of Stanley Road before moving to the residential side.

Residents will be contacted directly by the contractor, Siteworx, to manage access during this period.

“We understand that these works can be disruptive for residents and we apologise for any inconvenience caused during this project,” added Ms Harris.
