Temporary closure for river path

A 200m section of Hamilton’s river path network will be closed for several weeks to allow for a project to prevent erosion of a low-lying river bank.

The stretch of river bank in Days Park has been slowly eroding, and Hamilton City Council has obligations to ensure the situation does not deteriorate further in this popular riverside park.

The closure will commence 16 May to allow an estimated 40 tonnes of materials is to be brought on-site to fix gabion baskets and reno mattresses into position. Gabion baskets and reno mattresses are common stabilising methods for land or shoreline adjacent to water.

Path users will need to detour via River Rd – between the St Paul’s Collegiate Rowing Club Building and the driveway leading to the Swarbrick’s Landing barbecue area – while the project is underway.

It is estimated that the project could take up to five weeks to complete. This is to allow for changeable weather and variation in river levels.

While the closure is an essential planned renewal, the Council apologises for any inconvenience caused to the public.
