Night work to install new bridge over Northern Motorway

Night work to install new bridge over Northern Motorway at Albany

Beams for a new bridge will be lifted into place over the Northern Motorway at McClymonts Road in Albany as part of essential work as part of the Northern Corridor Improvements project, over the next four weeks.

The large bridge beams will be installed by crews at night starting from Wednesday 22 May.

The Northern Motorway will be closed from 9pm until 5am between Upper Harbour Highway/Constellation Drive and Oteha Valley Road on most nights from Sunday to Thursday.

NZ Transport Agency Acting Senior Project Delivery Manager Karen Boyt, says that people should plan ahead and look out for reminders on overhead signs.

“Local detours will be in place so we’re advising people to plan their journeys in advance and check online before they go.”

Six 43 metre long steel beams will be lifted into place by cranes alongside the motorway. Concrete deck panels will also be placed on the new bridge.

The new McClymonts Road Bridge will replace the existing bridge which will be dismantled later this year. It includes lanes for motorists as well as a walking and cycling path on each side, to enable safe access into the nearby Albany Station and business area.

Ms Boyt says the work will take place overnight to minimise disruption, but not on the Sunday and Monday nights of the Queen’s Birthday public holiday weekend.

The Northern Corridor Improvements project will provide a much needed transport upgrade for the whole Albany and North Shore community. It includes a proposed busway station, over 7kms of walking and cycling paths, a new motorway connection between SH1 and SH18 and will open up access to the Western Ring Route and travel to the airport.
