Rail Crossing Upgrade: Carterton Road To Close For 8 Weeks

Brooklyn Rd in Carterton will be temporarily closed from Monday while Kiwirail works on the level crossing upgrade.

The road would be closed to traffic at the crossing for about eight weeks.

Kiwirail was upgrading the level crossings on the Wairarapa Line to make them safer and ready for the arrival of faster moving, more frequent services from 2029.

Kiwirail programme director Andy Lyon said the preparation work for the Brooklyn Rd crossing was done before Christmas.

The next stage of construction would involve putting in barrier arms and warning signals ready to be wired up to go live in early 2027, he said.

“We appreciate that our work on the line can be disruptive and are grateful to the community for their patience.

“We’re doing things as quickly as we can, and are making good progress.”

A Carterton District Council spokesperson said the crossing upgrades were important for maintaining safety around railways and thanked residents for their ongoing patience.

Kiwirail’s preparation work had also been completed at Belvedere Rd, and more extensive work there would be up next on the schedule.

Elsewhere in Carterton, the Kent St crossing upgrade was almost complete with the crew due to finish and reopen the road in early March.
