All You Need To Know About The Upcoming Public Holidays In Pōneke
With both Easter and Anzac Day coming up, there will be some changes to Wellington City Council services and facilities over the next couple of weeks.
- If your rubbish and recycling is usually collected on Fridays, please note there will be no collections on Good Friday (18 April). Put your rubbish and recycling out on Saturday 19 April instead. Collections will happen as per normal on Easter Monday (21 April) and Anzac Day (25 April). If your rubbish is collected by a private operator, contact them directly for information on public holiday collections.
- On-street metered parking is free around Wellington City (including the waterfront) on Good Friday (18 April), Easter Sunday (20 April), Easter Monday (21 April), and Anzac Day (25 April).
- Clifton and ToryStreetcarparks – weekend rates apply on Public Holidays – Good Friday (18 April), Easter Monday (21 April), and Anzac Day (25 April).
- Wellington City Libraries are closed on all public holidays.
- Recreation Centres are closed on Good Friday, Easter Monday and Anzac Day, and some have reduced hours over the weekends.
- Swimming Pools are open public holidays, but some may have reduced hours.
- Harbourside Market will be open Sundays as usual over Easter and Anzac holiday weekends.
- Southern Landfill will be closed Good Friday (18 April). Other public holidays it’s open Monday to Saturday 7.30am–5pm, Sunday 9am–5pm. Public holidays are a busy time at the Southern Landfill, so be prepared forpossible delays.
- The Tip Shop will be closed Good Friday (18 April), and open on Easter Sunday for drop-off only.Holiday hours 8.30am-4.30pm apply for Easter Monday (21 April) and Anzac Day (25 April) it will be open in the morning for drop-off only, and from 1pm for normal trading.
- Tākina is open daily from 8am-5pm over the Easter weekend and Anzac Day. Disney: The Magic of Animation exhibition and retail store in Tākina is open from 10am-5pm (last entry at 4pm). There will be a free Easter event on Sunday 20 April from 12pm-4pm as part of the Disney: The Magic of Animation events programme. Visit wellingtonnz.com/Disney for more information.
- The Cable Caroperateson a Sunday timetable for public holidays: 8.30am-7pm.
- Wellington Museum is open daily over the Easter weekend from 10am-5pm, and 10am-5pm on Anzac Day.
- The Cable Car Museum is open 10am-5pm throughout Easter and Anzac Day.
- Space Place Easter opening hours are: Good Friday: 10am-11pm, Easter Saturday: 10am-11pm, Easter Sunday: 10am-5pm, Easter Monday: 10am-5pm, and Anzac Day 10am-11pm.
- Nōku te Ao Capital E is closed Good Friday (18 April), Easter Sunday and Easter Monday – but open Saturday 19 April from 9.30am-3.30pm, and closed for Anzac Day.
- Nairn Street Cottage is only open weekends during winter months, but will be closed Sunday 20 April and all weekend of 26-27 April.
- City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi at National Library of New Zealand is closed Good Friday (18 April), Easter Sunday and Easter Monday – but open Saturday 19 April from 9am-1pm with its exhibition Site Seeing, and closed for Anzac Day.
- Toi Pōneke Arts Centre is closed Easter Friday and Easter Monday, and open Saturday and Sunday for usual hours of 10am-4pm.
Anzac Dayis held annually on 25 April, the anniversary of New Zealand and Australian soldiers landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. There are a range of services across the city throughout the day:
- 6am - Dawn Service at the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park.
- 9am - Wellington Citizens' Wreath Laying Service at the Cenotaph Precinct (corner of Lambton Quay and Bowen Street). In case of bad weather, the event will be moved to the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul. See the Council Facebook pagefacebook.com/wellingtoncitycouncilfor updates.
- 11am - Anzac Day National Commemoration Service at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park.
- 2.30pm - Wreath Laying Service at Ataturk Memorial in Tarakena Bay, Strathmore.
