Sir Ashley Bloomfield Named Barnardos Aotearoa Ambassador
Barnardos Aotearoa is honoured to welcome Sir Ashley Bloomfield as its newest Ambassador. A dedicated advocate for equity and child wellbeing, Sir Ashley brings a wealth of experience and passion to support Barnardos in its kaupapa to give every child in Aotearoa the best possible start in life.
A respected public health leader and former Director-General of Health, Sir Ashley has supported Barnardos as a donor for many years. Now, he is stepping into a more active role, drawn by the organisation’s commitment to breaking down barriers and ensuring tamariki and whānau receive the support they deserve.

“Barnardos has been part of New Zealand’s landscape for over 55 years. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know about it,” says Sir Ashley Bloomfield. “This role is an opportunity to contribute to something that clearly makes a difference. At its core, this work is about fairness – giving every child in Aotearoa, no matter their circumstances, the chance to live a full and bright life. That’s something that will make Aotearoa a better place for everyone.”
With a career dedicated to improving health and wellbeing outcomes, Sir Ashley has long worked to address inequities and create better outcomes for all. He sees his role with Barnardos as a chance to help drive lasting change, ensuring more children receive the support they need to reach their full potential.
“We know child poverty and inequity remain significant challenges in Aotearoa,” he says. “But we’ve also shown time and again that when we come together with purpose and determination, we can overcome them. Barnardos isn’t just delivering essential services—it’s shaping a future where every child gets a fair go. I’m excited to be part of that journey.”
Barnardos Aotearoa Chief Executive Matt Reid says Sir Ashley’s involvement is a major an honour to have him champion our cause and advocate for children.
“Sir Ashley’s leadership, integrity, and deep commitment to creating a better future for tamariki make him an incredible advocate for our work,” says Matt. “His influence will help amplify our message, strengthen connections, and ensure that the voices of tamariki and whānau are heard. We couldn’t be more excited to have him on board.”
In addition to his role as an Ambassador, Sir Ashley will also be taking part in Barnardos Aotearoa’s Brighter Futures Challenge. In October 2025, he will embark on a 10-day trek along the Great Wall of China to raise vital funds, helping Barnardos continue to support thousands of tamariki and rangatahi reaching out to Barnardos’ 0800 What’s Up helpline.
“I love walking and tramping. While this isn’t the reason I’m joining Barnardos as an Ambassador, I’m excited for the unique opportunity to raise funds for such an important kaupapa. I encourage fellow walkers and adventurers to join me in this challenge. Together, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of tamariki,” says Sir Ashley.
As an Ambassador, Sir Ashley will work to elevate the profile of Barnardos’ work, foster collaboration with key partners, and advocate for sustained investment in the services that create brighter futures for tamariki and whānau.
