Public Library Membership And Usage Is Surging

Public Libraries New Zealand today released information on the membership and usage of public libraries during 2023/24.

The figures indicate that there are over 1.4 million active members of public libraries across New Zealand, representing 28% of New Zealand’s population.

PLNZ Executive Director, Bernie Hawke commented that “In 2023/24, New Zealand public libraries received 28.6 million physical visits and 30.2 million virtual visits, together representing a massive 58 million visits to public libraries”.

Collectively, New Zealand’s public libraries have collections of over 9.8 million physical items and 3.7 million e-Items, with borrowing of more than 48.4 million items in 2023/24. Among its other outstanding attributes, New Zealand is a nation of readers with public libraries as one of its pillars.

In 2023/24, public libraries delivered over 83,000 programmes including digital literacy classes, author talks, story time sessions and many more. These programmes attracted over 1.5 million attendees in 2023/24.

Public libraries and their local Councils have been active in removing economic barriers to library usage with 98% of libraries fine-free for children’s and youth collections, and 78% of libraries fine free for all collections, as at 30 June 2024.

Mr Hawke also commented that “New Zealand Public Libraries play a central role in fostering equality. Every public library in the country provides free internet access, ensuring digital inclusion across all communities.

In addition to offering printing, scanning, and copying services, library staff are available to assist library users and support the development of digital skills.”

The strong commitment of public libraries to inclusivity is further demonstrated by the provision of home library services for the elderly and housebound by 92% of New Zealand’s public libraries.

Based on their high level of community membership, usage and their diverse role in supporting access to information, technology and the development of literacy skills, public libraries are a cornerstone of New Zealand communities.
