Kāpiti Coast District Council have a calendar full of free and low-cost events to help people wanting to embrace a more sustainable way of life.

Council climate action and connected communities manager Monique Engelen says Sustainable September has involved collaboration with local eco-friendly community groups and businesses to offer a range of events for individuals, whānau and businesses no matter where they are on their sustainability journey.

“Sustainable September provides an opportunity to share sustainability education and awareness initiatives, while promoting social connection and fostering a sense of place,” says Mrs Engelen.

"Sustainable September aligns with Council’s Climate Emergency Action Framework where we look for and take opportunities to lead, facilitate and empower community projects and initiatives that build sustainability, resilience, and green innovation.

“Living more sustainably doesn’t have to be a big change. We’re providing workshops on a range of ways you can reduce waste and reuse resources - often with the bonus of cost-savings for households and businesses.

Kāpiti Coast Climate and Environment sub-committee Chair Councillor Jocelyn Prvanov says the Sustainable September initiative supports Council’s broader work to ensure the district’s communities are resilient, connected, and thriving.

“Our recently adopted Long-term Plan has a strong focus on building a resilient future for Kāpiti, and Sustainable September is one of the ways we can work towards that goal,” says Cr Prvanov.

“The calendar includes a lot of practical skills workshops such as waste minimisation, gardening, and composting. There’s also a sustainable art exhibition, conservation and cooking classes, cycling courses, repair cafés and so much more.

“By partnering with and empowering our community we can make a collective impact for current and future generations.”
