Featherston Water Pipeline Work Imminent

Work to replace a section of high-risk pipeline which supplies the only source of drinking water to Featherston will begin next month.

Last year, South Wairarapa councillors found favour with a $2.75 million option to replace and trench the section of pipeline that crosses the Tauwharenīkau River down to 4 metres.

The pipe is at high risk of failing and was previously found to be exposed in the riverbed.

Temporary solutions had been pursued by the previous council, but expert advice had urged the council to adopt a more permanent solution.

A report to the council’s Strategy and Working Committee, which would meet on Wednesday, said detailed design work was now completed with start date of March.

It was estimated the project would take three months to finish. The council’s water engineer Peter Trafford has reviewed and discussed with Wellington Water the emergency supply plan if there was a failure during the
