Wairarapa Briefs: Parking Bylaw, No Dogs In CBD

Parking bylaw in force

Masterton District Council’s new bylaw to prevent unwarranted and unregistered vehicles parking on public roads is now in full force. Over December and January the council gave 410 warnings to motorists parked in the CBD for having unwarranted and unregistered motor vehicles. Fines would have totalled $102,400 if the vehicles had been infringed. Each vehicle had a flyer placed on the window encouraging the vehicle owner to have their vehicle made compliant or risk a fine from 1 January 2025 onwards. A number of Masterton businesses known to use roadside parking to keep vehicles, long and short term, were visited by the council’s animal and bylaws team and given two weeks to make alternative arrangements for their vehicles. Enforcement action had been ongoing with these businesses since mid-December. In areas where high numbers of complaints had been received in the past there had been a reduction in the number of vehicles parked in roadside spaces, a council spokesperson said. – LDR

No dogs in CBD

Masterton District Council staff will be patrolling the central business district to remind dog owners that canines are not allowed in the area. They would also be engaging with dog-friendly retailers and food outlets to explain the Control of Dogs Bylaw and to encourage them to engage with their customers to reduce the number of dogs being brought into the CBD. There would be a period of about four to six weeks of education before enforcement action was considered. Certified service dogs were allowed in the CBD. – LDR
