Should Kaiapoi’s Charles Street become one-way?
The Kaiapoi-Tuahiwi Community Board has asked Waimakariri District Council staff to consider what would be involved in making Charles Street one-way from the Williams Street roundabout to Smith Street.
Board chairperson Jackie Watson said the roundabout was ‘‘too small’’ and other nearby streets in the Canterbury town were wider.
Deputy Mayor Neville Atkinson said he and Mayor Dan Gordon have been working on solutions with the council’s roading and he hoped to be able to report back soon.
The council’s community and recreation general manager Chris Brown confirmed staff are exploring some options to improve road safety.
‘‘Staff are undertaking some analysis to consider how we can reduce the incidence of large trucks driving over the kerb into the street gardens on the corners.
‘‘There are likely to be many options, however we have not started the investigation work to really comment on the viability of any at this stage.’’
The Charles Street / Williams Street intersection is a busy one with Enterprise North Canterbury, retail and hospitality businesses, lawyers and the Riverside Community Church all located nearby.
Trousselot Park, which sits on the north bank of the Kaiapoi River and hosts a number of community events, is to the west of the intersection, while Kaiapoi New World and the park and ride car park are to the east.
