The name Whaleway Station Road is well-known to Kaikōura locals, but now it’s official.
The Kaikōura District Council voted on Wednesday (February 26) to officially name the section of road from Beach Road (State Highway 1) to the railway and Whale Watch stations as Whaleway Station Road.
The council’s strategy, policy and district plan manager Matt Hoggard said the road has never had an official name.
‘‘For a very long time this section of road has been known as Whaleway Station Road, but the name has never been formally adopted.’’
An archival search found a document listing it as Railway Station Road, but the road is unnamed on historical maps, he said.
The decision followed a direct request from New Zealand Post.
Mr Hoggard said a representative from Whale Watch Kaikōura had approved the change, Te Rūnanga o Kaikōura was approached and had no objection to the name change.
