Here Comes The Rain Again: Wet Weather Driving Advice For Northlanders

With yet another heavy rain watch in place for Northland, NZ Transport Agency is reminding motorists to drive with care, keep safe following distances and slow down on the region’s state highways, to help keep everyone safe.

The MetService is forecasting heavy rain, possible thunderstorms and localised downpours for Northland from 10am tomorrow through until midnight. Rainfall may reach warning levels, particularly in the northern and western parts of the region.

People are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of heavy rain. Those who are traveling should be aware of possible flooding – especially in low-lying areas and near rivers, slips, fallen trees, reduced visibility and hazardous driving conditions, and potential road closures or delays.

Heavy rain can also cause potholes to form or worsen, creating additional hazards for drivers.

Our contractors closely monitor the network during weather events and will be paying particular attention to the below locations, where people are asked to drive with care and remain alert.

  • SH1 Mangamuka Gorge: Slips. Currently down to one lane past the recent slip site
  • SH1 Rangiahua: Flooding and slips
  • SH10 Kaeo: Flooding, especially near the Kaeo River
  • SH1 Whakapara: Flooding, especially near the Whakapara River

Significant road rebuilds on SH1 at Whakapara and Akerama may also be affected by bad weather. Heavy rain can impact the temporary road surface.

Those who need to travel should expect the unexpected and stay alert.

Driving through flood water can be extremely dangerous. Just 15cm of water can sweep a person off their feet, and 30cm can carry away most vehicles. Motorists should be aware of branches and other debris they may not be able to see under the surface of flood waters.

People are asked to be mindful of contractors who could be out clearing hazards off the road, and drive slowly through work sites.
