Disarm APEC's Indonesian Security Agents - Greens

by Selwyn Manning

Armed Indonesian security agents attending APEC in Auckland have drawn a warning from the Green Party.

It is calling for all Indonesian surity officers to be unarmed while here for the APEC leader’s summit meetings over the next week.

The Greens cite evidence placed before the Royal Canadian mounted Police public complaints inquiry into APEC 1997 in Vancouver, as good reason for Indonesian security to be placed under strict controls.

A Canadian police officer had to physically restrain one Indonesian guard who threatened to draw a firearm on protesters.

Green Party spokesman Keith Locke says this shows the safety of APEC demonstrators will be put at risk and to prevent this, the Government needs to take a stand.
