Ozone Hole Smaller Than Last Year - But Beware

Scientists studying ozone depletion over Antarctica say while the ozone hole is smaller than in recent years, people should still be wary of exposing themselves to the sun's rays.

The ozone hole has shrunk by about 20 percent compared to last year's hole.

Brian Connor, a scientist at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research, says that's according to NASA research.

However, Dr Connor warns that the 20 percent reduction does not susgest the ozone depletion problem is passing.

The 20 percent reduction he says that is within the range of normal variations which the hole undergoes every year.

Global weather patterns tend to influence upper atmosphere conditions and the circulating winds cause the ozone depletion hole to expand and contract.

So New Zealanders should remain vigilant and use plenty of sunblock and cover up when venturing outdoors this spring.
