Kiwi Jockeys in the Melbourne Cup

Shane Dye:
Truly a big race jockey
Dye seems to save his best for Group 1 races.
A noted form student
Dye works out how the race will unfold so as to give his horse the best chance of winning.
Began his career as an apprentice in Matamata.
Moved to Sydney in the mid 80’s where he has established himself as one of Australasia’s best.
A previous winner of the Melbourne Cup in 1989 on 30-1 outsider Tawrrific.
Dye will be riding the early favourite ‘Tie The Knot’ on November 2nd.

Lance O’Sullivan:
Back riding in New Zealand after stints overseas, O’Sullivan has won the New Zealand Jockey’s Premiership 10 times.
O’Sullivan has only recently returned to racing following a horrendous fall at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day in Ocober 1997.
He has come close to winning the Melbourne Cup with a 2nd in 1985 on Koiro Corrie May and a 4th on Senator in 1996.
At this stage O’Sullivan will be riding the English import Maridpour, now trained by Michael Moroney.

Jim Cassidy:
"The Pumper"
Another successful import from New Zealand to Sydney, Cassidy’s life has been a rollercoaster ride in recent years.
Thrown out of racing following the Jockey Tapes scandal, Pumper returned in 1997 on the back of a champion winning the Melbourne Cup on Might And Power.
A previous winner on Kiwi in 1983, Cassidy is probably the only jockey to win the Melbourne Cup coming from last (Kiwi) and leading all the way (Might And Power).
Cassidy’s form over the Melbourne Spring Carnival has been stunning in recent years and he will be riding previous Adelaide Cup winner The Hind in the Melbourne Cup
