New Immigration Minister Must Act Today!
by Selwyn Manning
If National can do one last positive thing before tomorrow's General Election, that should be action for the Mt Eden Prison Hunger Strikers.
The stand-off between former Immigration Minister Tuariki Delamere and the asylum seekers had drawn on for too long. The hunger strike has gone on for almost one month.
The Refugee Council has asked a group of asylum seekers to end their hunger strike before a tragedy occurs. Dr Rasalingham is worried about one man in particular, who is now very weak.
The men from India, Pakistan and Iran have refused to eat in protest at being kept at Mt Eden Prison while their appeal for refugee status is considered.
The Refugee Council has told the men to end their strike, to end the stand off between Immigration Service officials and the Government.
But surely today is the very day for newly appointed Immigration Minister, Wyatt Creech, to act on this shameful saga.
If there is one thing Mr Creech can do it is to visit the protesters and end the pain before death spells shame on the National lead minority government.
