Real Wrong On Valuers

REAL WRONG ON VALUERS. PROPERTY INSTITUTE TO LAY COMPLAINT

A new company called REAL, which is seeking to establish itself in the residential property market needs to get real itself, New Zealand Property Institute CEO, Conor English said today.

“Quite simply to imply that any and all valuers who a company called REAL don’t use are not independent, is wrong.

“This advertisement is unacceptable. The New Zealand Property Institute would be making a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority regarding the advertisements,” Mr English said today.

“It is unfortunate that this new organisation is seeking to cast aspersions on valuers who they may not have a contract with in an attempt to gain some market advantage.

“Marketing initiatives of new companies seeking to establish themselves in a market place can take many forms. That’s fine and it is good to see new things happening, but this move is unacceptable.

This follows a company called REAL showing adverts on TV depicting a lady on the roof of a house counting nails, with the script “ If you are finding it a struggle to get an independent valuation of your home get Real and get more control”.

Mr English said he had received a number of complaints from valuer members, concerned about the Real adverts. With respect to the issue of independence, REAL need to be careful how they pitch their business he said.

“Consumers will of course make up their own mind. But they need to know that all registered valuers are members of a professional institute and are bound by a code of ethics and rules of conduct, whoever they work for.

“As a professional Institute we expect all our members to live up to that code and be independent,” Mr. English concluded.
