AA Urges Motorists To Call Firestone

For immediate release 11 August 2000

AA URGES MOTORISTS TO CALL FIRESTONE

The Automobile Association is urging motorists with Wilderness 4X4 tyres to call Firestone to arrange a free inspection of the tyres.
This follows Bridgestone/Firestone’s voluntary recall in the United States of over six million 4X4 tyres, after its ATX, ATX II and Wilderness brand tyres were linked to 46 fatal car accidents.
“Bridgestone/Firestone New Zealand has now advised that one of the tyre types involved in the US recall has been available in this country,” the Association’s Director of Public Affairs, George Fairbairn, said today.
“The particular tyre is the 15” Firestone Wilderness AT 4X4 with P235/75R15 sidewall markings.”
Mr Fairbairn said the Association was not aware of any local upsurge in accidents involving 4X4 vehicles or Firestone tyres.
“We certainly do not want to unnecessarily alarm motorists. However, this is an important issue and motorists who may be affected should seek confirmation that their tyres are sound.
“All motorists with Wilderness tyres should take advantage of the Firestone free helpline to get their tyres checked out.”

The number is 0800 529 3400.
