Business And Government Must Work Smarter

“Business And Government Must Work Smarter With Each Other…

……. to find a formula to break NZ out of its pessimistic mood”.

Commenting on the latest consumer confidence survey showing the normally upbeat Auckland is gloomier than at any time since December 1991, Auckland Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive, Michael Barnett, laid out an action agenda for business and Government to forge a partnership for the future:

 Develop a shared vision – in which Government, business and all New Zealanders set down a key statement on where they want this country to be.
 Strong and compassionate leadership – with a clear commitment and sense of direction to take NZ down the path to where we want to get, and do what is necessary to make it happen.
 A low tax environment - to make NZ competitive and attractive for international and domestic businesses to locate and grow from NZ.
 Smart and skilled people – a re-dedicated education and training infrastructure that acknowledges our business-led future, and desire to build a successful nation.
 Skills-based immigration strategy – to attract the type of “new blood” needed to encourage energetic enterprises to flourish.
 Business incubator growth campaign – to increase the number of innovative, growth-focussed international businesses that we need to fund the standard of living we all demand.
 World-class infrastructure – areas like our transport network needed to support an environment that can deliver a business-led recovery and put us on a vigorous and sustainable business-led expansion.

While many businesses are ‘just getting on with it’ and there is a lot happening in business to be positive and optimistic about, the entrenched pessimism demands that business itself invest time and effort with Government to find a formula to encourage all New Zealanders to be fully committed and supportive of their country.

“Our response to the Olympics shows that New Zealanders want to be winners and to build a successful nation. Let’s do it but we can only “do it” in a shared partnership,” said Mr Barnett.
