Ford Laser XRi To Ignite Small Car Segment

Ford New Zealand is launching an exciting new Laser sports hatch, which has smart looks, a distinct personality and a recognisable road presence.

The 2001 Laser XRi is one of the most attractive and highly specified vehicles in its class, and builds on the reliability and dependable nature of the well established range of Ford Laser vehicles.

The new model also continues the proud association between the brand and New Zealand Olympic cyclist Sarah Ulmer.

"The Laser XRi is quite unlike any of its predecessors. Not only does it boast smart new looks, but it is an exciting well appointed sports hatch powered by a 2.0L engine," said Brand Manager, Barbara Paley.

"It is very much a car for people who know what they want, so it really appeals to sports minded individuals like Sarah and people who want something special out of their vehicle."

"The Laser is a confident car with a very distinct personality and recognisable presence."

The new 2.0L XRi model is surrounded by a package that simply oozes sports appeal. The look starts with the 16'' alloys, fog lamps, roof rails, center mounted aerial and continues with flowing lines incorporating redesigned front and rear bumpers through to the rear lip spoiler.

A dealer fitted body styling kit is available and can give the Laser sports hatch an even more aggressive look.

Safety features include Laser's Triple H body structure incorporating side intrusion beams, Anti Lock (ABS) brakes and dual airbags.

Air conditioning, remote central locking, power mirrors and power windows add to convenience, and a six-stack in-dash CD player contributes to driving pleasure.

"We were aware that there was a demand for a more powerful sporty model to enhance the current Laser range, and to combine this in an exciting vehicle for those people looking for a 2.0L car with more individual appeal," said Barbara Paley.

"We are confident that we have been able to deliver this with the Laser XRi."

Both the manual and automatic derivatives create 98kW of power and 174Nm of torque, and both are badged XRi. They are available in a choice of eight exterior colours.

"This model Laser captures a go-get'em attitude, and has style to match. It is not only a sporty looking vehicle, but has that 'little bit extra' hiding under the hood to back up its great looks," she said.

The Ford Laser XRi manual has a recommended retail price of $31,200 and the automatic version of the XRi will sell for $32,400.
