Carter Holt Harvey Confirms Legal Action
26 April 01
Mainland Stevedoring Ltd and Carter Holt Harvey have filed papers seeking an injunction to prevent further unlawful activities by New Zealand Waterfront Workers Union (NZWWU) members in disrupting the loading of logs in the South Island.
Jay Goodenbour, Carter Holt Harvey Chief Operating Officer, confirmed the papers had been filed at the Wellington High Court today.
Mr Goodenbour said the company was supporting Mainland in seeking the injunction, consistent with its stated intention of relying on the protection of the law to ensure that its right to load ships was no longer interfered with.
Mr Goodenbour said the legal action did not restrict the NZWWU's right to free speech or to protest.
"We respect their right to protest, even though we don't agree with their point of view. They must respect our right to go about our lawful business," he said.
