Environmental Packaging Awards

The Packaging Council of New Zealand's 2001 AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE FOR ENVIRONMENTALLY ACCEPTABLE PACKAGING attracted a broad range of entries covering eight categories. As was the case two years ago, the judges supported by their professional Technical Advisors had a difficult time before reaching agreement as to the sector winners.

The intent of the Awards programme first introduced in 1999 is to recognise and reward those companies / individuals who are making a significant contribution to improve the environmental performance of packaging, packaging systems or the operation of their manufacturing facilities. Factors considered included:

 Achieving material or energy reductions
 Optimising the opportunity for materials recovery
 Utilising most effectively recycled materials
 Representing systems which minimise the adverse effects on the environment

It has been a feature of the entries on both occasions that some aspects that offer gains from an environmental perspective have not been initially obvious. Some entries, while appearing similar to other products in the marketplace, did, after detailed consideration demonstrate significant environmental gains. This was the case with the winner of the Plastic and Supreme Award categories - Coca-Cola Amatil (NZ) Limited with the PET Soft Drink Bottle Packaging.

The Council, the Judges and the Technical Advisors are encouraged by the progress being made with regard to environmental performance and recognise that the entries submitted typify progress in the packaged goods industry. The entries submitted from design students were of a particularly high calibre and clearly indicated their understanding of current issues and positively encompassed the direction in which design must take in the future.
