Software Companies To Target Australian IT Spenders At AIIA 2001

Auckland, September 4, 2001 - New Zealand software companies are taking on the lucrative Australian Government IT market when they travel to the prestigious AIIA Software Showcase in Sydney.

The nine companies will present an array of innovative and fundamental business "building blocks" spanning the document management and core business applications industries at the showcase on September 5th. In particular, they will be targeting the Australian Government sector, Australia's biggest IT spender.

The Australian Information Industry (AIIA) Software Showcase is a high profile, business-to-business event. The showcase brings together Australian software developers, buyers, investors, R&D organisations, systems integrators, development partners, alliance partners, and media representatives. It is the only event of its kind in Australia where exhibitors demonstrate their software products and capabilities in a simple, no-frills trade exhibition format.

Trade New Zealand is supporting the nine companies on their mission.

Lisa Hinton, Trade New Zealand's Technology and Services Sector Team Manager, says the Australian IT sector is an important market for New Zealand companies to gain a footing in. The AIIA Software showcase represents a unique opportunity for Kiwi companies to court the Government IT dollar, as the event has traditionally been well attended by Australian Government IT executives.

"The AIIA exhibition gives New Zealand companies an opportunity to showcase their niche vertical applications to key Australian IT decision makers," Ms Hinton says. "In particular, these firms will be looking to offer their niche solutions to government departments and vertical markets including the legal, financial and health industries."

Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that expenditure on IT&T by Government in Australia was $A3,317 million, of which almost a quarter ($A788 million) was spent on wages and salaries of in-house IT&T employees, and almost a quarter ($A795 million) on contract payments to other organisations. Of these contracts, more than two-thirds ($A553 million) was for outsourcing ongoing services. Most (89%) contract payments for IT&T services went to private sector service providers.

The companies are ALM Systems Limited, Arena Consulting Limited, Enigma Publishing Ltd, 4iT International Limited, I.T. Link Limited, Owlcentral Limited, Profax International Limited, Reliance Software, and Software Consultants Ltd. Between them they represent the full spectrum of document and records management, health, security and accounting solutions for Government and corporate requirements.

Many of the nine companies on the mission count New Zealand Government agencies and public sector companies as their clients. Seven of the nine companies will be exhibiting in a co-located New Zealand software company display area, and two will be on display with their Australian distributors.

Ms Hinton says the companies are interested in forming strategic partnerships within the Australian market and identifying direct sales opportunities for their solutions.

"Companies within these sectors recognise the importance of getting business fundamentals such as electronic document management and support systems in place," says Ms Hinton.

The conference is being held on 5 September at the Sydney Convention Centre, Darling Harbour, Sydney.

Arena Consulting Limited is an Internet Security consulting company
specialising in the area of Intrusion Detection. The company is managed by
its owners Colin and Paulette Haxton, who have been working in network
administration and security since August 1996. Arena helps New Zealand
Government departments keep their finger on potential and actual attacks on
their IT systems. Primary products are the AMS Intrusion Monitoring service

Owlcentral Limited – Legal Document Management

The Owl Group grew out of the CyberLaw project initiated in January 2000 to
create an expert system for creating and selling bulk or commoditised legal
documents across the Internet. Owlcentral began developing its Owldocuments
suites of legal documentation after that project, and as no suitable software could be located off the shelf, development commenced on the software platform Docdolittle.
Owl has an agreement to sell its documents on the Butterworths website and
is finalising details on a project to convert Butterworths documentation to
include the Owldocuments style of interactivity with Docdolittle.
