Taiwan WTO Membership Benefits New Zealand

Taiwan's entry to the World Trade Organisation will deliver substantial benefits for New Zealand exporters and demonstrates the value of the WTO.

Trade Liberalisation Network Executive Director Stephen Jacobi said from Doha that Taiwan's commitments to the WTO amounted to a substantial opening of the market. "Taiwan is already a significant trading partner. It can only increase in importance with WTO membership. That means new opportunities for New Zealand business and jobs for New Zealanders".

Mr Jacobi said that there had been press reports in Taiwan suggesting that there was interest in negotiating freer trade arrangements with New Zealand once WTO accession was completed. "A bilateral negotiation if it could be got underway could address remaining Taiwanese import restrictions" concluded Mr Jacobi.
