Work Stoppage Figures Concerning
24 January 2002
Work stoppage figures for the first year of operation of the Employment Relations Act are showing a steep increase, which is of concern to employers says Business NZ.
Chief Executive Simon Carlaw says the Statistics NZ figures for work stoppages in the September 2001 quarter show a marked increase in person days lost: 23,440 compared with 1,399 the previous quarter.
"The person-days of work lost for the September 2001 quarter are higher than the annual figures for 1998, 1999 or 2000.
"The figures demonstrate that industrial disputes are taking longer to resolve, with consequent harm to the productive sector.
"The fact that the majority of the stoppages occurred in the manufacturing sector is also concerning, as it will impact on New Zealand's export performance," Mr Carlaw said.
