The Number One Movie In NZ Film History!

The day New Zealanders have been waiting for has arrived in record breaking time.

Peter Jackson’s THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING has made history today by becoming the number one all time top grossing movie in New Zealand with a box office total to date of NZD$12,990,000 million.

TITANIC, the previous record holder, took 45 weeks to reach the number one position at NZD$12,967,660. THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING has easily surpassed this record by becoming the New Zealand number one all time top grossing movie in just 13 weeks.

Lisa Hubbard, General Manager says today: “This is a rewarding moment for all New Zealanders and a tribute to Peter Jackson and his passionate team. This box office record is confirmation of kiwi’s enthusiasm and support for this film. What better way to celebrate reaching the number one position than with a film made right here in New Zealand.”

THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING not only has secured the coveted all time number one position in the country but also shattered countless records in it’s rapid climb to the top with the New Zealand opening day record at NZD$720,933, the New Zealand opening week record at NZD$2,945,822 and also the only film ever to have taken over NZD$2 million in a weekend with a box office record of NZD$2,125,911.

THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING released throughout the country on December 20, 2001 in over 60 locations on 92 screens and is distributed in New Zealand by Roadshow Film Distributors NZ Limited.
