Global Licensing & Innovation Signs Agreement to Introduce DEFOR® Packaging System into China.

Carter Holt Harvey business Global Licensing and Innovation (GLI) today announced an agreement with International Paper Pacific Millennium (IPPM) which will see Carter Holt Harvey’s DEFOR® Packaging System manufactured and marketed in China.

Under the agreement, GLI will license the DEFOR® design to IPPM for 3 years. IPPM will manufacture the system across its many box facilities, with GLI providing technical expertise and marketing support.

GLI Chief Executive, Ross Files said that as the world’s largest fruit and vegetable producer, China was a market of significant growth potential for the company.

“Since joining the World Trade Organisation in late 2001, China has been rapidly expanding its export markets. The potential to market DEFOR® in such a fast-growing agricultural industry is enormous,” said Mr Files.

The introduction of DEFOR®, a system of interlocking, stacking, modular corrugated boxes designed specifically for packing and shipping delicate produce, is set to significantly enhance China’s agricultural export industry.

“Worldwide, countries are looking for Chinese product in quality packaging, but in the past China’s packaging technology has been below international standards,” said S.W. Yip, VP Manufacturing and Information Technology.

“DEFOR® makes it possible to deliver Chinese produce to world markets in first-class condition and will enable China to fully leverage its comparative advantage in agricultural production.”

GLI will also appoint a regional director, based in Shanghai, and will be providing training for IPPM’s sales force.

“Our strength is that we have the marketing knowledge and networks to license a product globally. This means we can take proven ideas with great commercial potential, place them where they will be the most beneficial, and provide the support and training to help local manufacturers bring them into the marketplace,” said Mr Files.

GLI was set up by Carter Holt Harvey in April 2001 as part of the company’s transformation into 33 separate businesses. GLI has a bank of patented designs, technologies and systems, which it allows packaging manufacturers worldwide to use under license.

The company is also working with third party patent holders to market their designs to international manufacturers.
