New Fuel Standards Soundly Based

The Government has taken a very sensible approach to improving the quality of New Zealand’s fuel Road Transport Forum Chief Executive Tony Friedlander said, in response to the Government’s announcement of new petroleum products specifications regulations.

“Managing the improvement of New Zealand’s fuel quality having regard to changes in the regional fuel market is a sound move. The timetable Government has adopted means New Zealand will be moving to better quality fuels in sync with Australia, which has to be good news for both certainty of supply and pricing.

“Given the size of the New Zealand market, pressing ahead without regard for the wider market could have imposed significant extra costs on New Zealand road users.

“The move to bring New Zealand into line with international ‘best practice’ fuel standards is being well managed. The Associate Minister of Energy Paul Swain is to be congratulated on the pragmatic but very positive process he has put in place.”

Mr Friedlander also welcomed the inclusion of filterability requirements in the new regulations. “It’s good timing as it’s almost exactly a year since New Zealand faced what could have been a crisis situation with diesel fuel filters clogging.”
