Opportunity For Fuel Rebates

August 1, 2002

Pak’N Save Offers Customers Opportunity For Fuel Rebates

Petrol outlets are to be built in the carparks of selected Pak’N Save Food Warehouses as part of a scheme to make shopping at Pak’N Save more convenient, and give grocery customers an opportunity to qualify for rebates on fuel purchases.

Pak’N Save customers will be able to receive a rebate on their fuel purchase depending how much they spend on groceries. They will get the rebate on petrol or diesel when they fill up at the Pak’N Save fuel outlet. The higher the grocery bill, the bigger the fuel rebate.

Foodstuffs anticipate this initiative would be as popular with their customers as similar schemes had proven to be with supermarket customers in Australia, the United States, Europe and the UK.

Foodstuffs already have a policy of providing ‘lowest every day grocery prices’. This is seen as another way of rewarding customers and increasing the convenience of shopping at Pak’N Save.

The Pak’N Save fuel outlet will be a self-service design, although initially there will be plenty of help on hand for shoppers. Pricing at any given time will be competitive with the prevailing street prices, and the rebate a customer receives on fuel will be tied to the level of grocery purchase.

The fuel outlet will be designed to allow customers easy, convenient and efficient access. Aside from petrol and diesel, customers will be able to purchase from a full range of engine oils. Free compressed air and water will also be available.

There will be a large canopy over the self-service area to provide shelter for customers using the pumps. Customer will have the choice of paying at the pump or the on-site kiosk.

The idea was not to establish a petrol discount brand, but to provide greater convenience for Pak’N Save customers, as well as the benefit of a rebate on their petrol or diesel according to what they spend on grocery shopping.

All motorists will be welcome to use the fuel outlet, but only Pak’N Save customers who have the rebate voucher as a result of their grocery purchase will be able to get the fuel rebate. It is anticipated that the presence of the fuel outlet will give the Pak’N Save name greater prominence in the area, further increasing their reputation for shopping convenience.

The fuel site will be owned and operated by the Pak’N Save owner operator, and will meet all local and national standards required of a retail fuel outlet. BP, a leading oil company in New Zealand, will supply fuel under an agency agreement. This will see BP set the pump price and pay the owner operator a commission for each litre of fuel sold.

The fuel outlet will also comply with all local and national planning requirements.
