Fonterra urges perspective on milk research
FONTERRA URGES PERSPECTIVE SURROUNDING A2 MILK RESEARCH
FINDINGS
Fonterra Co-operative Group is urging consumers to be cautious about recently announced research findings reported in the media possibly linking A1 milk consumption with heart disease in rabbits.
Milk and its components have always been vital throughout life. Its complex components provide important nutrition for general health and well-being. Fonterra is researching many aspects of milk and obviously as part of that programme examines any new scientific developments.
“The science behind this research is complex - the recent announcement that A1 milk consumption is linked with heart disease in rabbits needs careful consideration and review by experts in the field,” said Dr Chris Mallett, Director Corporate Research and Development.
“A1 milk consumption was first proposed to be a factor in heart disease in the mid 1990s. As with all scientific research associated with milk Fonterra took the issue very seriously and performed its own extensive analysis of the data to support such a claim.
“The results from this analysis did not support an effect of milk consumption on heart disease and were recently published in a scientific journal.
“These conflicting results show further studies on other animals and ultimately humans are needed.”
