Kiwi Employers Desperate For Skilled Staff

The ability to recruit and retain skilled staff are the two main issues of concern for kiwi employers according to results in the latest TMP Job Index Survey released today (November 27).

TMP Worldwide, New Zealand and Australia’s largest Human Resources company conducts the Job Index Survey on a six monthly basis. The survey combines the expectations of key employment decision-makers, from all major industries, across the spectrum of different organisation sizes.

TMP Worldwide, General Manager – New Zealand, Mr Denis Horner said that when employers were asked the two key issues likely to affect their recruitment activity over the coming year, recruiting and retaining skilled staff were at the top of the list – 26.5% and 18.1% respectively.

“Clearly to assist these issues, businesses need to look at upgrading existing staff skills through providing ongoing training, as well as considering tapping into the large pool of very skilled, experienced over-50-year olds not working,” said Mr Horner.

“In addition they need to empower school leavers to make the right career choice. TMP has organised an annual Workchoice Day for the past eight years, whereby senior college students are able to visit businesses they are considering working in.”

Other issues of concern for employers regards future recruitment were potential domestic economic uncertainty (12.6%), the need to cut costs (9.6%) and continued global uncertainty (9.5%).

These results were relatively consistent across regions and small, medium sized and large organisations surveyed.

However, looking at the key issues facing various industries in terms of recruitment activity over the coming year, Legal (34.9%) and Electronics (34.8%) employers were the most likely to report ability to recruit staff as a key issue. Media employers (30.0%) were the most likely to indicate that the ability to retain skilled staff was a key issue.
