Vehicle registrations up last year

Vehicle registrations for the 2002 calendar year were up by more than eight percent from 2001 according to statistics released today by the Land Transport Safety Authority. The LTSA figures show that a total of 282,160 vehicle registrations were processed in 2002, an increase of 8.4 percent from the 260,379 registrations recorded in 2001.

Total first time car registrations were up 7.3 percent, from 186,855 in 2001 to 200,504 last year.

New car registrations rose 10.1 percent, from 58,102 to 64,086, while used import registrations were up 6.0 percent, from 128,693 to 136,418.

Toyota topped the market share for new car registrations in 2002 with 17.8 percent, followed by Holden with 16.1 percent and Ford with 15.4 percent.

The most popular new car registered last year was the Holden VX Commodore, with 4,940 registrations processed, followed by the Ford Falcon with 4,501 registrations and the Toyota Corolla with 4,280.
