“What The Lips Speak, The Hands Don’t Do”
“For The Warehouse founder Mr Stephen Tindall, to urge every business to consider hiring at least one young person in order to eliminate the scourge of youth unemployment, is akin to George Bush urging all other nations to make reparations for the damage that the US bombs have wreaked upon Baghdad” said MADENZ founder Ms Stephen Tindall-the woman today.”
“Based on The Warehouse Ltds financial statements and my best conservative estimates, Mr Tindalls preference to purchase imported products rather than New Zealand made products, has cost the New Zealand economy a total of $2.04 billion in loss of taxation, loss of spending power and welfare payments between the years of 1990 -2001.”
“During this same period Mr Tindalls imports alone have caused a total of 75,706 jobs to be lost in the New Zealand manufacturing sector.”, Tindall- the woman says.
The New Zealand Business Council for Sustainable Development (NZBCSD) which Mr Tindall chairs, has launched a guide to youth employment aimed at the business sector. The council estimates that the net effect of getting youth off the dole and into work is a benefit of $400 million to the country.
“Rather than making more demands on the already strained New Zealand business sector, the NZBCSD ought to point out to their chair, that his company alone in 2001 - had it chosen to replace its imported products with New Zealand made products - could have saved the New Zealand economy $498 million for that one year and could have created 18,321 productive jobs for New Zealand youth.”
It is said that the definition of a hypocrite is - “what the lips speak the hands don’t do.”
“On behalf of the growing stream of tertiary students whose numbers grew by 47,000 last year and also on behalf of the presently unemployed youth, MADENZ is taking a keen interest in what all of our leaders hands are doing for the future wellbeing of our young people.”
