Auckland, New Zealand – Tranz Rail Holdings Limited, [NZSE:TRH], Dunedin, Hillside Workshops will be kept busy over the next two years working on two projects worth close to $14 million. The first of the two contracts for the Auckland Rail Project has already started and both parties are planning to sign a final contract for the second by May 9.
The first contract is due for completion in June and has involved the overhaul of two, three-carriage units and two locomotives for use on the Auckland line. The second project will see the rebuilding of former British Rail carriages and is due for completion in December 2004.
All parts of the Hillside workshops are involved in both projects, from fabrication, paint shop to the refurbishment team.
The two, three-car carriages were previously used in Queensland and New South Wales and all the carriages have been completely gutted and covered by new fibreglass lining .Air conditioning will be installed in each carriage.
The second project involves an extensive fit out for the former British Rail carriages, which will be lowered to match the height of the Auckland stations and extensively remanufactured to better than new conditions.
